WHAT ARE DYNAMIC Family Portraits

“Dynamic Family Group Shots” are:

What is a “Dynamic Image?” To me it is a photograph that captures family members in an unfiltered, active, connection filled and often spontaneous way. Unlike traditional posed family portraits, these shots emphasize genuine connection and expressions. They often feature family members engaged in activities, sharing moments of joy, laughter, or connection. But they can also include elements like playful gestures, candid laughter, or even a shared look that conveys a strong emotional bond “I choose you to share the chaos” kind of looks.

The power of a dynamic family group shot lies in its ability to convey real, unposed emotions and interactions. These images feel more authentic and relatable, often evoking stronger emotional responses because they reflect genuine moments in many peoples lives. Parents understand other parents small glances better than anyone else! Documentary candid photography emphasizes capturing the essence of family relationships and the unique dynamics that make each family special.

These images aren’t just “everyone smile at the camera on 3” images. These images often make your eye uncomfortable. Like the eye doesn’t know where to look next because there are so many small stories being told all at once.

These images are often layered in nature so you can see multiple stories unfolding at one time. Space or the lack of is often utilized to help tell the story.

Everyone is interacting with one another and has their own small story going on. I am able to document their candid and sincere facial expressions and emotions.

That look of “There is no one else I’d rather share this chaos with”. Imaging looking back on this image when your children are grown and how you will be instantly brought back to the days it felt like you are your partner understood the necessary chaos.

It can apply to wedding family images as well!
